How Do We Keep Algae Out Of Lake Afton?

friendsoflakeafton • Nov 03, 2020

We Need Your Help

Lake Afton finally looks AMAZING!

Now that the algae is finally under control, we are asking for help from our community to keep it a healthy and beautiful jewel for all to enjoy.

Here's how you can help:
  1. We need volunteers to donate their valuable time to help improve the appearance of the Lake.  Watch for notices on FB and on our website and flyers posted on the community bulletin board by the Vault restaurant and outside of Borough Hall.  We plan two Clean-Up Days a year, one in the spring and one in the fall.
  2. We need financial donations which are used for the costs to maintain the Lake’s health, which include:
  • The aggressive algae treatment regimens administered by Clean-Flo International.  Treatments are expensive, yet critical for the health of the lake.
  • A well-maintained aerator system that has created a healthy water environment. There are electric bills and maintenance fees.
  • Removal of large branches and tree limbs from the Lake.  Large tree parts get waterlogged which require heavy machinery to pull them out.  Wet, rotting wood left in the lake contributes to our algae problem.
  • Routine maintenance of the intake and output pipes to ensure a healthy water level in the Lake.  A plumber needs to be hired to flush out the sediment that can clog up the pipes, preventing water from flowing.
  • Routine landscaping costs for grass and weed control and the cost of any mulch, plants, trees for our spring and fall Clean-Up Days.
  • Unanticipated costs that may arise.
Our yearly expenses typically total between $15,000-$20,000 to manage the Lake and keep its heath where it is today. Your donations will allow our beautiful Lake Afton to continue to be Yardley’s town jewel and, as has been needed more recently, as a quiet source of comfort for many during this COVID pandemic.

Lake Afton has been a treasured backdrop in many photos and memories for over two centuries. There have been photos of weddings, graduations, proms, birthdays, Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, and more. Lake Afton’s calming landscape has provided outdoor recreation opportunities for everyone in our community.

The Friends of Lake Afton relies on donations to manage the Lake’s health. FOLA is in urgent need of donations to continue with our successful algae control (approximately $15,000/year). If we pause even for a short time, the ugly algae infestations and unhealthy water conditions will reappear. Without donations, Lake Afton’s health will be in jeopardy.

Donations can be made via our FB donate button, our website donate button, Facebook @Friends of Lake Afton, PayPal @Friends of Lake Afton, VENMO @ FOLA Yardley or by mailing a check to: FOLA/P.O. Box 529/Yardley, PA 19067.

If you would be interested in making a yearly donation to FOLA, you may do so through PayPay, on our website or through our Facebook page.

Thank you for your continued support!
